SAT Critical Reading
Sentence completion questions in an RC consist of a sentence with one (or) two words missing. From the given five choices, the correct option will be the one that would best complete the sentence. Some strategies which could help you have a quicker go on the same are :-
  • Never look at the options before understanding the meaning (or) the crux of the sentence. This is to be done in order to understand what kind of a word would go best with the sentence - a positive connotation (or) a negative one. This helps in eliminating choices and saves time.
  • Look out for logical connecting words and phrases like ‘Despite’, ‘because of’, ‘and’, ‘Even though’, etc to understand which would be the best answer option – a synonymous pair (or) and an antonymous pair.
  • Having a good command on vocabulary would help you a lot, as at times; the correct answer choice is very close to the incorrect ones. In such a situation, only a strong vocabulary can help you eliminate the incorrect answer choices.
  • Go back and check your answer once you are done and see if the answer still makes coherent sense.

Critical Reading Section --- Reading Comprehension (Short and Long) :
  • Develop ‘Active Reading’ while going through an RC passage. This means that whatever has been read must be well understood and comprehended. It is important to remember that every paragraph in the passage has a purpose and a function as a whole.
  • It is important to understand the question that is to be answered. Different types of questions require different strategies. It is necessary to understand which strategy is to be applied to answer a particular question.
  • ‘Point of Elimination’ plays a very important role.
  • Make sure that the option you have chosen as the answer appears in the given text. Never use common opinions (or) beliefs to choose an answer.

Twin Passages :
  • Read the first passage and try to crack the first two to three questions in a single –go, as usually the first two to three questions relate to the first passage.
  • Move on to the second passage and read the next two to three questions. In the end, correlate both the passages to see if they are argumentative (or) promote the same point. Then, attempt the last two to three questions.
